In this final segment of the multi-part Q&A series by Christine Boyd, Dr. Rudert and 3 more of the nation’s top celiac experts discuss outside-the-gut symptoms of gluten sensitivity and much more! You may have heard that gluten sensitivity - also known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity - can cause digestive problems. But gluten sensitivity, like celiac disease, has also been tied to serious neurological problems, such as migraines, numbness and tingling in fingers or toes, clumsiness and balance issues. Mood disorders like depression and anxiety have been reported, too.

An excerpt from the interview:

Question by Christine Boyd:

Neurological disorders .... and migraines have been linked to gluten sensitivity. Should people with neurological conditions be evaluated for gluten sensitivity?

Dr. Rudert Answers:

Absolutely. I often see headaches; migraine, tension and cluster - in my celiac patients. I have also seen peripheral neuropathy, and even patients diagnoised with multiple sclerosis (MS). Peope with celiac disese can be found in every medical practice - the neurologist, psychiatrist, obstetrician, pediatrician, etc. Unfortunately, awareness of these outside-the-gut manifestations of gluten related disorders is lacking.
